Most greenhouses are summer structures with winter marketing. A real 4-season greenhouse comes down to two things you can verify on a spec sheet: insulation and structure.
What separates a winter greenhouse from a summer one
Two failure points show up when cold weather arrives. The first is heat loss: single-wall glazing (thin film, cheap panels, even glass) leaks warmth almost as fast as the sun delivers it, so the inside tracks the outside within a couple of degrees on a cloudy day. The second is snow: wet snow is heavy, and light-tube frames were never engineered to carry it.
Both problems are visible on a spec sheet before you buy: look for twin-wall glazing with a real thickness figure, and a published snow-load rating. If a listing shows neither, it is a summer structure.
Why 6 mm twin-wall is the winter workhorse

An unheated twin-wall greenhouse is not a tropical bubble, and anyone who promises otherwise is selling. What it reliably does:
- Mild-winter states (zones 8-10): year-round growing of most cool and warm season crops, with ventilation being the bigger concern on sunny days.
- The broad middle (zones 5-7): cold-hardy greens (spinach, kale, lettuce, mache), root crops and overwintered starts keep going all winter; tomatoes and peppers get a 4-8 week head start in spring.
- Hard-winter states (zones 3-4): winter harvest narrows to the hardiest greens, and the greenhouse earns its keep by turning a 4-month growing season into a 7-month one.
