How to Level the Ground for a Greenhouse
No special machinery, no contractor: a string line, a long level, a tamper and a patient afternoon get a backyard from sloped lawn to a base ready for steel.
What you need
No machinery required at backyard scale: stakes and mason's string, a line level or a 4 foot spirit level on a straight board, a tape measure, a spade and a rake, landscape fabric, crushed stone, and a hand tamper or rented plate compactor. For slopes beyond a few inches, a wheelbarrow earns its place. Budget an afternoon for a mild slope, a full day for a real one.
Step 1: Measure the area and mark the footprint
Mark out the greenhouse footprint plus about 12 inches on every side: the working margin makes edges cleaner and gives the base shoulders that will not crumble. Drive a stake at each corner and run string between them.

Step 2: Strip turf and clear obstacles
Remove grass, roots and stones across the marked area. Turf comes off in strips a spade-depth thick, and it should come off entirely: buried grass decomposes and settles unevenly under the base within a season. Chase out any roots thicker than a finger; leave a nearby tree's major roots alone and reconsider the spot instead, since severing them harms the tree and the roots win the long game against any base.
Step 3: Find out how much slope you have
Run a string tightly between two opposite corner stakes and hang a line level on it (or set your long level on a straight board between them). Raise the string's low end until it reads level, then measure from string to ground at both ends: the difference is your slope across that run. Repeat on the other axis. Under about 2 inches of total slope is an easy afternoon; more is honest digging.
Step 4: Cut the high side (rather than filling the low side)
The golden rule of small earthworks: soil you dug is settled, soil you piled is not. Cut the high side of the footprint down toward the level of the low side, spreading the spoil elsewhere in the yard. Filling the low side with loose soil feels faster and produces a base that sinks on that side within the year. Where some fill is unavoidable, use gravel, not soil, and compact it ruthlessly in thin layers.
Step 5: Fabric, gravel, and compaction in layers
Lay landscape fabric across the excavation to keep soil out of your stone, then build the pad: crushed stone in layers of about 2 inches, each compacted before the next with a tamper or plate compactor. Two thin, hard layers beat one thick, soft one every time. Rake, compact, check with the level, repeat until the pad sits flat and slightly proud of the surrounding grade so rain sheds away from it.
Step 6: The flatness check
The target is flat within about a quarter inch across the whole footprint. Check by sweeping the long level on its board across the pad in several directions, and by running string diagonals corner to corner. A quarter inch is stricter than it sounds; it is also exactly the difference between panels that glide into their channels and panels that fight.
Step 7: Square the corners with the diagonal trick
Re-set your corner stakes to the exact greenhouse footprint and measure both diagonals. Equal diagonals mean square corners; unequal means the rectangle is skewed, and you shift two corners until the tapes agree. Do it now, while a corner moves with one hand, rather than at the door-hanging step, when it does not.
Step 8: Plan drainage and mark the anchor points
Two last touches before calling it done. Confirm the pad sheds water: slightly proud of grade, no dam of soil around it, gravel free to drain. And mark where the anchors will go, at every base connection point of the frame, so nothing is discovered during assembly. With the pad flat, square, draining and marked, assembly becomes what it should be: a calm weekend of bolting labeled parts together.
Your questions, in short
The frame sits on the perimeter, so a leveled perimeter band is the structural minimum, and a timber-perimeter base does exactly this. Leveling the whole pad is still worth it: you will walk, roll carts and set benches on that floor daily.
A few inches across the footprint is comfortable hand work in an afternoon. Beyond roughly 6 inches, the volume of digging and stone grows quickly; that is when renting equipment or reconsidering the spot starts making sense.
It is cheap and it does two jobs: it keeps the gravel from slowly disappearing into the soil, and it stops weeds from growing up through the pad. Skipping it saves twenty dollars and costs you both benefits within a couple of seasons.
If the slope is mild, yes: level Saturday, assemble Sunday is a realistic plan with two people. On bigger earthworks, give the base its own weekend and enjoy the assembly fresh.
