Greenhouse Assembly: What Building a Kit Is Really Like
The build is a weekend, not a construction project - if you take the steps in order. Here is the sequence, the tool list, and the three mistakes that slow people down.
Before the crate arrives
Two preparations make the difference between a calm build and a frustrating one:
- The base. Compacted gravel, a slab, or a timber perimeter - flat and level. A frame assembled on uneven ground fights you at every bolt and the door never closes square. Our guides on leveling the ground and foundations and anchoring cover the options.
- The spot. Sun, access, clearance from fences and wind exposure - settled in where to place a greenhouse. Moving a greenhouse later is a project; moving a plan is free.
Delivery comes on a pallet by freight carrier, curbside, in a protective wooden crate. Have two people to move parts from the curb, and check the crate before signing the delivery receipt.
The build, in order
The instructions are illustrated step by step and the parts are labeled by number; the sequence below is what those steps add up to:
- 1. Inventory. Lay parts out by label. Twenty minutes here saves an hour of mid-build searching.
- 2. Base frame. The steel base goes down first, gets squared (measure both diagonals - equal means square) and leveled.
- 3. Frame. Arches or wall profiles bolt to the base, then the ridge and horizontal members tie them together. Leave every bolt snug but not final until the full frame is standing, then square and tighten.
- 4. Panels. The pre-cut twin-wall panels slide into their channels, UV-protected face out (it is marked). No cutting, no drilling into panels.
- 5. Door and vents. Hang the door, fit the roof vents, check swing and closure.
- 6. Anchoring. Fix every base point to the ground - concrete anchors into a slab, ground anchors into gravel or soil. This step is the wind rating. Never leave it for later.

A cordless drill with bits, a level, a tape measure, a stepladder, work gloves, and a second pair of hands. That is genuinely the whole list - the hardware is included in the kit, and nothing needs welding, cutting or a workshop.
The three mistakes that cost people a weekend
- Building on unprepared ground. The number one cause of slow builds and doors that stick. Level first, always.
- Final-tightening as you go. A frame needs play to square itself. Snug first, square the whole structure, then tighten.
- Skipping the anchors because the forecast is calm. A greenhouse is a light box with sails for walls. Anchor the day it goes up - the wind and snow ratings assume it.
