How to Keep a Greenhouse Cool in Summer

The structure that stretches your spring will happily cook your tomatoes in July. Cooling a greenhouse is a solved problem; here is the toolkit, in order of impact.

Why greenhouses overheat, and what "too hot" means

The same trap that makes March generous makes July brutal: sunlight enters, becomes heat, and stays. On a cloudless day a closed greenhouse can run tens of degrees above the outside air. For most crops, trouble starts when the inside sits much above 85 to 90°F for long stretches: tomatoes and peppers drop blossoms instead of setting fruit, greens bolt to seed, and everything drinks frantically.

The good news is that heat stratifies: the worst of it collects at the ridge, above the plants, which is exactly where the first tool works.

Open the top: roof windows first

Because the hottest air pools against the roof, an opening at the ridge dumps it with no machinery at all: the hot layer spills out and cooler air is drawn in low to replace it. This is why a roof window is the highest-impact cooling purchase, ahead of anything powered. One transforms a small or mid-length greenhouse; long ridges deserve two, each draining its own zone. Automate it: the opener beats your schedule

The heat spike happens mid-morning on workdays. The automatic opener answers it in real time: its wax cylinder expands with warmth and pushes the vent open, then closes it as the evening cools. No electricity, no forgetting, no coming home to wilted beds. If the greenhouse gets one summer accessory, this is it.

Open the ends: doors and cross-flow

With the ridge exhausting, give the intake side its share: the door, propped open all summer, feeds the loop. On longer greenhouses, an additional door in the far end wall turns the whole structure into a gentle wind tunnel: air enters one end, sweeps the length of the growing space, and leaves at the other. On still, baking afternoons, that full-length path is the difference between moving air and a stagnant core.

Shade the roof in high summer

Past a certain point, the answer is to let less sun in. Shade cloth over the roof takes the edge off the peak hours, drops interior temperatures noticeably, and stops the leaf scorch that midsummer light inflicts even on sun-loving crops. It goes on for the hot months and comes off in fall, when you want every photon back; it comes in two lengths sized to our roofs.

Rule of thumb: if your region sees weeks above 90°F, plan on cloth; in mild-summer regions, ventilation alone usually carries you.

Water: the crop’s own cooling system

Plants cool themselves by transpiring, and they can only do it with water at the roots. In a heat wave, inconsistent watering is what turns a warm day into wilt and blossom-end rot. Water deeply in the early morning so plants face the hot hours loaded; in serious heat, a second light round late afternoon helps. A drip irrigation system makes the consistency automatic and waters the soil rather than the foliage.

Damping down, wetting the paths on brutal afternoons, buys a few degrees through evaporation and raises humidity around the leaves: an old grower's trick that costs a watering can.

Keep air moving, and actually measure

Even with vents open, dense summer canopies create still pockets. Space plants so air can pass, train climbers up strings to keep the floor level open, and if you have power nearby, a small circulation fan is honest help in the stillest weeks.

Finally, measure instead of guessing: a simple min-max thermometer at plant height tells you what the greenhouse actually did all day, and whether your changes are working. Numbers beat impressions, especially before you decide whether to add cloth or a second window.
