A sealed greenhouse cooks on any sunny morning, in any month. Ventilation is not an accessory to add someday; it is how the machine is supposed to work.
The physics: a greenhouse is a heat trap by design
The panels let sunlight in; the light becomes heat; the enclosure keeps the heat. That is the whole point in March, and the whole problem in July. Inside, the warmed air stratifies: the hottest layer collects against the roof, the coolest sits at plant level. On a sunny morning a closed greenhouse can climb past comfortable growing temperatures within an hour or two, even when the outside air is mild.
That stratification is also the free engine of ventilation. Hot air at the ridge wants to escape; give it an opening up there and it leaves on its own, pulling fresh air in behind it. No fan required.
Natural ventilation: openings high plus openings low
Effective passive ventilation needs both halves of the loop:
- Exhaust, high: an opening at or near the ridge, where the hottest air is. This is the roof window's job, and it is the single highest-value opening in the greenhouse.
- Intake, low: the door, and on our models the second end wall can carry an additional door, which lets air travel the full length of the structure on hot days.
One without the other underperforms: a roof window with everything else sealed starves for intake; an open door alone exchanges air near the floor and leaves the roof layer cooking.
Roof windows: the exhaust valve
The roof window mounts directly in the roof panels, at the height where the hot layer lives, and opens to let it spill out. It comes in a manual version, and an automatic version that opens itself, covered next. On sizing: one roof window transforms a small or mid-length greenhouse; long configurations appreciate a second, spaced along the ridge, because each window drains the hot layer of its own zone.
Automatic openers: ventilation while you are at work
The temperature emergency happens at 10 in the morning, when you are elsewhere. The automatic vent opener solves precisely this: a wax cylinder expands as air warms and pushes the vent open, then contracts and closes it as the evening cools. No wiring, no batteries, no programming, and it never forgets.
If your greenhouse gets exactly one accessory, this is the one that most changes daily life, in every season including winter.
Circulation inside: no stagnant corners
Air exchange with the outside is half the story; movement inside is the other half. Moving air dries leaf surfaces, strengthens stems, evens out temperature pockets and makes fungal spores' life difficult. Passive layouts help: keep some spacing between plants, avoid solid walls of foliage against the panels, and let the intake-to-exhaust path cross the growing space rather than skirting it. In dense summer canopies, a small circulation fan is a reasonable powered addition, but layout and openings come first.
Condensation and humidity: ventilate in winter too
Dripping panels on a cool morning mean warm, humid inside air met cold surfaces overnight. Some condensation is life in a greenhouse; persistent wet is a warning, because still, saturated air is exactly what botrytis and mildew wait for.
The counterintuitive rule: winter needs ventilation too. Even in January, crack the roof vent on sunny middays to swap the moist air out; an automatic opener does it for you. Water in the morning rather than the evening so foliage dries before the cold night, a point developed in winter growing in an unheated greenhouse. How much ventilation does your greenhouse need?
A practical way to think about it, without pretending false precision:
- Short configurations: one roof window plus the door covers the loop.
- Mid lengths: one roof window minimum; a second becomes worthwhile as the ridge gets longer.
- Long configurations: two roof windows spaced along the ridge, and the additional door at the far end turns the whole structure into a wind tunnel on demand.

A season-by-season rhythm
- Spring: automatic openers earn their keep daily as sun strengthens while nights stay cold. Seedlings are tender; avoid parking them in the direct intake draft.
- Summer: everything open, every day: roof windows, doors. Close only against storms.
- Fall: taper back down; the opener follows the cooling weather on its own.
- Winter: closed by default, cracked on sunny middays for humidity. The opener handles the surprise warm spells.
